3D Ultrasound Compounding

The movie shows an uncompounded (left) and compounded (right) image volume acquired in a 56-year-old female's breast in vivo. The compounded volume was generated by scanning the region of interest from 5 different look directions, registering all views to the reference look direction using non-linear transformations, and averaging the registered volumes. Playing the movie will slowly scan through the volume frame by frame and wil let the viewer appreciate the differences between the uncompounded and compounded images. Note the overall reduction of speckle noise, better delineation of specular reflectors, and increased contrast (e.g. the lobular structures on the center right after 1/4 to 1/2 of playing time) in the compounded volume.
To move to a particular frame in the movie, or to scan through the volume more rapidly, use the Fast Forward/Fast Reverse buttons on the lower right, or click on the sliding Position Indicator at the bottom and move it left or right with the mouse button pressed.

If you are using a Unix workstation, you may not be able to view the movie within the browser. Click here to download the movie for viewing with 'xanim' or a similar application.
